Traditional for-profit organizations and corporate enterprises have reached high levels of efficiency in utilizing financial capital and effectiveness in interacting with the sophisticated global economic networks. However, large modern organizations often lack the ability to effectively engage the public and create positive social, environmental, or governance impact (Lashitew, Narayan, Rosca, & Bals, 2021). In modern society, the informational abundance and multimodal communication facilitated by the technological advancement and economic networks (Knight and Tsoukas, 2019) has been touted as a key factor underlying organizations’ inability to facilitate affirmative public engagement. While regulatory as well as scholarly efforts in the past decades have allowed organizations to better visualize and manage their corporate responsibility and improve communication with their stakeholders, research shows that these efforts do not sufficiently fulfil their goals. More recently, with the latest advancements in blockchain technology and virtual reality, the concepts of decentralized and distributed organizations have taken shape. In the paper, we conduct a bibliometric analysis and systematic review of the literature on decentralized organizations and the potential for blockchain technology in corporate governance.
